The Mavericks were and alternative country band that was very popular in the 1990s. They had many great hits and won multiple Grammies while the band was together. Their inspiration from famous country singers like Patsy Cline Johnny Cash and Hank Williams helped define them as one of the more ground breaking country groups of the 90s and made them a band that is still remembered today.

While their debut album was not received as well as they had hope, when their album What a Crying Shame hit the scene in 1994 their fortunes turned. With hits such as “Oh, What a Thrill” and “There Goes My Heart” What a Crying Shame had managed to go platinum by the spring of 1995.

Their follow up album Music For All Occasions came out in 1995 and with it came more great hits by The Mavericks. The famous song “All You Ever Do Is Bring Me Down” was included in this album. The song reached number 13 on Billboards list of top country songs.

The album Trampoline followed in 1998 and with it came “Dance the Night Away” which was a huge hit in the UK, reaching the number 4 slot on their top 100 songs.

Each band out there has its own unique origin on how they got started. The Mavericks is no exception to the fact. Founded in 1989 The Mavericks started out as Raul Malo met bassist Robert Reynolds at a record store in Florida. Both having similar taste in Country music it was all just a matter of time before they got the band up and running. Later drummer Paul Deakin came into the mix and by the late 1980′s as they added guitarist Ben Peeler they began performing as The Mavericks.Check out this link here. They started out playing in clubs around Miami. Raul Malo being a great song writer and singer the band was bound to take off into the spotlight in no time. The debut album self titled “The Mavericks” came in 1991 and they later signed on with the music label MCA Nashville and Quickly after this came their second debut album title “From Hell to Paradise” and this became their first major label release in 1992. Later some replacements were inevitable as guitarist Ben Peeler was replaced by David Lee Holt, which later was replaced by Nick Kane in 1994. They went on to record six studio albums between 1991 and 2003 leaving their mark on the Country music genre.

Like any good country stars, the Mavericks are often seen out and about in Nashville and any true fan is required to head to Music City and scope them out, if given a chance. In case you’re able to set your home alarm systems and make it to Nashville this summer, here are a few of our favorite tips for things to do…when you’re not listening to the Mavericks, of course.
The Parthenon – Occasionally a big name band will play here, but when nothing’s going on the Parthenon is still an impressive replica of its Grecian peer. Check out Independence Park as well to see if there’s a weekend festival going on.
Check out The Gulch – Nashville’s newest and most sustainable neighborhood, the Gulch is a great place to grab dinner and take a walk. There’s a lot of young, hip shopping so bring your wallet if you venture this way!
Belle Meade Plantation – This 19th Century Plantation home has been running horses for decades and now Nashville’s only winery is fully functional and on the property. Check out some history and pet some horses while you’re at it!

The 1995 Grammy Award winning (for best country performance by a duo or group with vocal) Mavericks officially started in 1989, in Miami, Florida. The band first began to take shape, though, in the mid-80′s, when Raul Malo and Robert Reynolds found their mutual love for country music, at a local record store, and its classic icons such as Johnny Cash and the legendary Hank Williams. Raul Malo was a singer and a songwriter and Reynolds played the bass. They added drummer Paul Deakin and guitarist Ben Peeler to the mix by the late 80′s and began to play in venues around the south Florida region.

The band wrote and performed songs written by Malo, who was the energetic momentum behind much of the band’s music. Sense many clubs, especially those who bill country music acts, want cover bands, the Mavericks often played at local rock n roll venues.

Their debut album, The Mavericks, was recorded in the fall of 1990 and released in 1991 by Cross Three, a Miami record label. All thirteen of the songs on the album were written by Raul Malo. It had one official single, “This Broken Heart,” which did not reach the singles chart.

The Mavericks were founded in 1989 in Miami Florida. Since cover tunes were all that was wanted in country type clubs, the Mavericks started playing in rock clubs and writing their own material.

In 1991, their debut album, The Mavericks, was released. Raul Malo, lead vocalist and guitarist, wrote all the material for this first recorded album. “This Broken Heart”, was the only single released from this album, and sadly, it never made the charts. Another track, “I Don’t Care If You Love Me Anymore” was a country single that hit low on the charts after being on the soundtrack to the movie “Michael” in 1996.

5 albums followed, with 14 singles making the country charts. “All You Ever Do Is Bring Me Down” was the highest chart topping single in 1996, and was on the album “Music For All Occasions.”

Other band members included Robert Reynolds, Paul Deakin, and Nick Kane. Through their time together, from 1991-2003, the band racked up several major awards. The Academy of Country Music Awards gave them Top New Vocal Group in 1994, and Top Vocal Group in 1994 and 1995. They also won a Grammy in 1995 for Best Country Performance by Group.

Finding individual pictures of the country band The Mavericks can be pretty easy when using something like an image search engine. The downside of using that however is you’re going to get way more pictures than you wanted, most of them not even being related to The Mavericks since image searching is pretty vague for the most part. For example, if you were to search The Mavericks, you would more likely than not just end up looking at a bunch of horses! If you were to just do a regular search, you would receive mostly links where just one picture of the band is shown, not to mention the unrelated sites. Visiting every site to see all of these pictures is an option, but there are a few websites that can be visited to see many pictures all at once! An up and coming social/music site,http://www.last.fm/music/TheMavericks/images has several user uploaded pictures of the group; you could even upload one yourself if you found one elsewhere that isn’t up there. Since The Mavericks are a country band, many country sites are sure to have pictures of the group, but one of them,http://www.cmt.com/pictures/the-mavericks/photo-gallery/150212/1617149/artist_photo.jhtml has an entire gallery that you can browse through.

The Mavericks no longer play together, but their influence on the music world is far from over. Frontman Raul Malo, in particular, has continued to work on his craft since the bands breakup, recently releasing Sinners and Saints, a solo work to continue a string of successful albums, to the delight of fans who can never get enough of Malo’s inimitable sound. With arguably even more twang than on previous recordings, Sinners & Saints proudly lets it downhome roots shine through. Recorded in Austin, Texas, featuring contributions from many veterans of the South Texas music scene, the album does not try to hide the influence the area has on the music, blended flawlessly with Malo’s traditional Nashville stylings, rather embracing the eclectic combination. An all-around well balanced mix between original songs and personally crafted covers, the 9 track release is sure to entertain not only original Mavericks fans, but new followers in the post-Mavericks era and genuine music lovers far and wide. Not specifically catering to audiences of old, the upbeat backdrop of musical instruments will, however, clearly will remind listeners of the Mavericks glory days.In total, Sinners & Saints spans 9 tracks, a brief compilation, short but sweet. In traditional Malo fashion, the songs take listeners into a very personal space while rewarding the ears with soothing melodies. The album represents who Malo is as an artist, with elements of his Hispanic heritage and many stops on the road to reach the point he is at today, reflected in the lyrics, subject matter and selective tributes, a must-have purchase for anyone who appreciates musical talent.

While “All You Ever Do Is Bring Me Down” may have been the highest reaching single The Mavericks ever released on US country charts, it did not set the high watermark for their North American success. “Here comes the Rain,” released in 1995 as part of their Music for All Occasions, spread across the Great White North like winter weather, rising to number 4 on the Canadian country charts. The song also had success on American soil, though more tempered, reaching the 22 spot for US country. Why so much success north of the border. Perhaps, it’s in the lyrics. Let’s take a lookYour love’s a heartacheThat’s torn me apartYou’ve watched my heart breakRight from the startYou took everything you wantedAnd now that you are goneChorus 1Here comes the rainFalling down on meI’m showered in painNothing remainsOf what used to beChorus 2Here comes the nightDark as my soulThere’s no end in sightNo shining lightNo love to holdHere comes the rain I must have been dreamingI must have been blindBut I never thought youCould be so unkindTomorrow I’ll forget youBut I can’t forget you nowChorus 1Here comes the rainFalling down on meI’m showered in painNothing remainsOf what used to beChorus 2Here comes the nightDark as my soulThere’s no end in sightNo shining lightNo love to holdHere comes the rainChorus 1Here comes the rainFalling down on meI’m showered in painNothing remainsOf what used to beChorus 2Here comes the nightDark as my soulThere’s no end in sightNo shining lightNo love to holdHere comes the rain

In the years since the band’s first 1999 breakup, the various members of The Mavericks have branched out to chase their own individual accomplishments. Though the band would bring it back in for a brief stint in 2003, they would never recapture the success of their earlier years.Raul Malo has moved on to his solo career, releasing his first individual album in 2001, prior to the bands attempted reboot, titled Today. The album did not garner much attention in the United States, reached the UK hit list at 80. Malo would see slightly more success in his second attempt, You’re Only Lonely in 2006, ranking at 38 among US Indies. The year 2007 saw Malo make his prodigal return to the US Country charts, with his album After Hours climbing to the 43 spot. He followed up the success later that year with Marshmallow World & Other Holiday Favorites which checked in at 11 in the US Holiday category. After a 2 year hiatus, Malo released Lucky One in 2009, and just released a new album, Sinners and Saints, hitting shelves this month.Robert Reynolds joined a group known as Swag shortly after the breakup. He was later involved with the Hillbilly All-Stars, a group focused on touring and live shows with some intermittent studio time mixed in. He has recently played alongside Kevin Montgomery and the Roadtrippers and has worked in other aspects of the country music industry with digitalrodeo.com, an online music community for country artists and fans.Like Reynolds, Deakin has bounced around from act to act for a while, actually playing with Reynolds at a few stops. While he has not pursued future music endeavors as heavily as his former bandmates, all 3 original Mavericks will be forever remembered in music history.
